The UK has traditionally been a major hub of video game development. Microsoft Xbox, EA, Activision, THQ, Sega, Atari, Sony Computer Entertainment, Rockstar / Take Two, Codemasters, Nintendo all have a significant presence. Many of the best games companies started in the UK. The industry is big business and there is a continuing shortage of skilled staff


More than 22,000 people work in the UK games industry and it is the third largest in the world in terms of developer success and sales of hardware and software. This is a significant industry that has seen huge growth over the last 30 years.

The courses offered at the Academy have been developed to give students a good understanding of the industry, and to give them the skills they will need for employment in this exciting area.

Our dedicated games design and development laboratories are equipped with specialist gaming hardware and software which are used in the industry.  Students will have access to a full range of desktop applications and virtual learning environments.

Throughout their studies in the Academy, student’s courses will have access to some of the gaming industry’s biggest influencers and current gaming experts.  The course are suitable for students who are interested in wanting to become a games designer or 3D modeller, web designer and this could the first stage in realising a career in a variety of fields within the Creative Industries.

Students will complete practical assignments using a range of media including moving image and audio and will work along industry practices. Students studying this qualification will have the opportunity to engage in live industry briefs. Units studied include:

• Advertising production
• Broadcasting
• DVD authoring
• Film studies
• Multi camera techniques

Celebrating Vocational Achievement
This course offers students the opportunity to develop skills and techniques used in the rapidly growing world of computer and video games. Students will use industry-standard software packages and develop their talents to meet the needs of a range of industry sectors. Units studied will include:

• Drawing concept art for computer games
• Digital graphics for interactive media
• 3D modelling and animation

If you demonstrate a real eye for creative design and are motivated by seeing your work as part of new media and interactive platforms this FT is for you. The programme of study will involve developing design ideas and concepts including design for web, mobile platforms, print media and new interactive SMART platforms. You will also develop your understanding of the working practices in related creative sectors such as fashion, music, and photography as well as working in teams with software programmers and engineers.
